Assessing Venezuela’s referendum vote
December’s constitutional referendum in Venezuela resulted in the narrow rejection, by 51% to 49%, of proposals which aimed to deepen the country’s social progress and expand its democratic structures. Francisco Dominguez examines the reasons behind the outcome, including right-wing media propaganda insisting that a ‘yes’ vote would make children state property, and asserts that the continuing popularity of the Chávez government and its policies mean there is no turning back for the Bolivarian Revolution. Protest against Condoleezza Rice’s visit
UPDATE: DEMO DETAILS ANNOUNCED - 12:30-3:30PM, DOWNING STREET
As Bush tries to stave off disaster in Afghanistan, Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, flies to London next week to ask Gordon Brown to send more troops to Afghanistan. With UK defence minister Des Browne saying that Britain could be in Afghanistan for decades, Rice will try to get Gordon Brown to commit more troops now, as a lever to get other countries to increase their deployment.

Stop the War Coalition is calling an emergency protest on Wednesday, 6th February. Details of Rice’s meetings with Gordon Brown are not yet known but it is anticipated that the protest will be at Downing Street, the timing to be announced as soon as her plans are known. Read more
Policy exchange exposed
Policy Exchange, a right-wing think-tank close to the Conservative Party, has been exposed by Newsnight after a report claiming that “extremist literature is subverting Britain’s mosques” was found to be based on fabricated ‘evidence’.
